Wilkommen Auf Heino

26 June 2009

Heino is a German singer of popular music (Schlager) and traditional Volksmusik. With his booming voice, bright blonde hair, and ever present sunglasses, Heino is considered by many an icon of kitsch. In the English-speaking world the Latin American themes of many of his songs lend themselves to jokes about German emigration to South America after World War II.

firstcollab.jpg

All the way back in 2007 we embarked on our first collaborative project with Industrial Designer Eneri Abillar for the Nixon Art Mosh event. Our concept was a one-of-a-kind pocket bike, with complete UNIV detailing. It included a custom tank cover, hand stitched and British racing green color. There were loads of other trick features throughout. So cool… stop by UNIV and check it out anytime.

These are our friends Mike Ardelean and Mike Dytri, circa 2000. We all worked together on Clive back in 1999 to 2001. Mike A. now still rides for Verde and Lavar (among others) and works at Quik. Mikey D. was doing Subfreakie at the time and now, of course, is the brains behind Ludwig. We’re all working on a new project which we will be announcing soon. You will be blown away… believe it!

The UNIV + Matuse “Frogman” Wetsuit Project

9 April 2009

um1.jpg

Introducing the UNIV + Matuse Frogman wetsuit project. This collaboration is an extremely limited run of the most high-end technological wetsuits designed specifically for surfing.

The concept for the UNIV + Matuse Frogman wetsuit was to blend the aesthetic soul of early 80’s wetsuits and with the high-tech fit and functionality of today’s premium performance wetsuits. Both UNIV and Matuse are located in laid-back coastal San Diego and have long been supporters of each other’s brands. Matuse wetsuits are made from Yamamoto rubber, which is derived from 99.7% pure limestone. It is warmer (98% water impermeable) and lasts longer (titanium coated) than standard neoprene. It is also kinder to mother nature since it’s made from limestone and does not come from petroleum. Yamamoto’s Geoprene technology means thinner rubber is warmer rubber. It not only weighs less, it is also more flexible for better performance. The UNIV + Matuse Frogman wetsuits will be available at the UNIV Concept Shop in Encinitas Calif.

um2.jpgOther specifications:
Core material: Yamamoto rubber, derived from 99.7% pure limestone
Outer lining: Hydrasilk Nylon, silky smooth,  hydrophobic material that’s your windbreaker in the water
Mini Back Zip: To maximize ease-of-entry while minimizing water entry.
Country of Origin: Designed in USA, engineered in Japan.

Matuse is a breakthrough wetsuit brand that is focused on making the best product and creating function-first innovations. Outside of technical gear for surfing, their mission also enhances cultural and environmental awareness. See more at the Matuse website here.

Chris Miller is a friend of UNIV and just so happens to be a skateboarding legend. He rose to skate stardom during the 1980s, riding for G&S and Schmitt Stix, before launching his own brands Planet Earth and Adio. Chris is regarded as one of the most stylish skateboarders ever and is still skating almost every day. He was at the Pala skatepark recently and was wearing the UNIV Slavik t-shirt. Like it?
